Autumn on the Farm: Harvest, Sowing and Preparing for Winter

As the leaves turn gold and the days grow shorter, life on the farm enters a new season. Autumn is a time for gathering crops, caring for animals and preparing the land for the colder months ahead.

Across the UK, the work varies with the weather, the region and the type of farm. Yet one thing connects them all: the balance between finishing this year’s work and getting ready for the next.

Gathering the harvest

For some farmers, autumn brings the busy task of lifting potatoes, harvesting apples or gathering sugar beet. Timing depends on the crop and local conditions, with wet weather sometimes making fieldwork more difficult.

The harvest is the result of months of care, but the work doesn’t end when crops leave the field. Moving, sorting and storing them are important jobs too.

Sowing for the seasons ahead

Even as one harvest finishes, another growing season begins. Some farms sow winter wheat and barley in autumn, giving the crops time to establish before the coldest weather arrives.

Choosing when to sow means paying close attention to the soil and forecast. Every autumn is different, and farmers must adapt their plans to the conditions.

Preparing animals for winter

As grass growth slows, livestock farmers review feed supplies and prepare for the months ahead. Depending on the animals and the farm, this may include checking housing, repairing fences and making sure water supplies remain reliable.

Some livestock spend winter outdoors, while others move into housing. Their care depends on their needs and the conditions around them.

Making room for wildlife

Autumn also brings changes for the wildlife living alongside farmland. Hedgerow berries and seeds provide seasonal food, while hedges and other habitats offer valuable shelter.

A countryside walk can reveal this quieter side of farm life: birds gathering in the hedges, fallen leaves beneath the trees and fields changing colour as the season moves on.

A season of endings and beginnings

Autumn farming is about more than bringing in the harvest. It is a season of careful preparation, daily animal care and decisions shaped by the weather.

Next time you pass a freshly sown field or see a tractor working in the autumn light, take a moment to notice. You may be watching the start of next year’s farming story.
